Custom T-Shirt Quilts

The T-Shirt Quilt Process

Ordering your t-shirt quilt is easy when placing your order through A Quilt For A Lifetime! The step-by-step process will guide you through what you need to do to get your quilt ordered. Each quilt is custom made, exactly how you would like it! T-shirt quilts take approximately four weeks to finish. If you have any questions after reading through the site, please, feel free to contact me at any time.

Step

Decide what size you would like to make your custom t-shirt quilt. Quilt sizes are in the Materials section on the right. After deciding what size quilt you would like, you will need to choose and purchase your material that will be used for the both sashing and the backing. Your list of materials is located in the Materials section on the right.

Step

Choose the layout for your shirts. The layout sheets are located on the ordering page. DO NOT CUT YOUR SHIRTS! I will cut the shirts for you to be sure they are correctly sized for your quilt. Shirts must be washed before shipping, however you cannot use any kind of fabric softener or dryer sheets when you are getting your shirts ready for the quilting process.

Step

Place your order! You can conveniently place your order through the website. Print up the order form and fill it out completely. You can pay your $100.00 deposit online, or send a check or money order with your order form. Pack up your shirts, materials, order form, layout sheet, and your deposit (if not paid online) and send it to the address on the order form. Or if you prefer you can make arrangements to meet at my location in Rochester Minnesota.

Step

When the materials arrive, I will confirm the delivery and the details of your order. In approximately four weeks your quilt will be completed and you can give the gift that lasts a lifetime.

Materials Needed For Your Quilt

Choosing your material for the backing and the sashing is very important! Please follow these general rules when choosing fabrics for your t-shirt quilt. I will provide the batting and the stabilizer; all you need to provide are the t-shirts, sashing, and backing. Please contact me with any questions you have about your materials.

  • Directional fabrics should not be used. Directional fabrics include plaids, stripes, or fabrics that have a design that goes one way.
  • Fleece may be used for the backing, however this will require a different amount of material to be used. You must contact me for the correct size you will need.
  • Fleece and knit fabrics may not be used on the quilt.
  • Fabric that is used for the backing and sashing cannot be pre-quilted or pre-stitched material (three layers).

Quilt Terminology

Backing: the fabric that is used on the backside of the quilt

Binding: the narrow strip of fabric that finishes the outside edge of your quilt

Batting: the insulation layer that is used between the front and back layer of the quilt

Machine Quilting: the stitching that holds the layers of your quilt together

Sashing: the fabric used inbetween the t-shirts, on the front of the quilt. This acts as a frame around each block

Sashing Squares: the small fabric square used at the corner of each block

Square: refers to the single t-shirt that will be one block in the design grid
